Back in the bad old days (boooooo), some not so nice peeps used to chirp “Oh, he’s funny that way” to mean gay. And not in a happy way. It was a drunken whisper, a warning, an unkind wink.
Well we took that phrase back and turned it into a legacy!
Founded in 1997 as the world’s first LGBTQ+ comedy and performance festival, We’re Funny That Way™ has been celebrating brilliant voices with laughter, music, performance, and community. A community that has donated close to half a million dollars our foundation, The Rainbow Charity Network, has granted to grassroots queer orgs struggling to stay afloat.
We also won a Canadian Screen Award for our lockdown Pride special. But shhhh, nobody likes a braggart.

About We’re Funny That Way – North America’s premiere LGBTQ2S+ comedy and music festival!

Right now, we’re all about getting ready for the next big festival, and as soon as we have our dates you can mark your calendars! We can’t wait for the We’re Funny That Way Festival to return , packed with incredible queer talent and even more joy, laughter, and as always FUNDRAISING FOR THE RAINBOW CHARITY NETWORK! And guess what? We’re adding a brand-new Film Festival Night to showcase the funniest queer short films around – and funniest queer funny short-shorts (who hasn’t worn those) with prizes, of course!
Everything about the festival is in support of the Rainbow Charity Network. For over 25 years, WFTW has been raising funds to give transformational grants to grassroots LGBTQ2S+ organizations across Canada. In 2024, with the help of our amazing supporters and audience, we granted $25,000 to Imprint Youth, a safe haven for queer youth in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Katie Xiao (played by the fabulous Kate Rigg) ditches her big-city career to save the struggling LGBTQ+ centre in her hometown. Will she succeed in turning the place around?
